INSURANCE FOR PASSENGERS

A trip to another country is usually associated with holidays, which we await for the entire year. We also travel abroad in business. In order to go through the trip without any fears, we recommend insurances connected with international travels.

Even though we have no problems with our health condition, accidents happen everywhere: on the street, in a car, airplane, on a beach, etc. Medical counselling or hospitalization in a foreign country may be very expensive. Even simple doctor’s counselling can tighten your budget significantly.

Insurance companies have in their offer a wide range of insurances for travellers. Generally, they are divided into: third-party liability insurances and insurances concerning a person signing and agreement with an insurance company.

Taking into consideration third-party liability insurance, the company takes the responsibility for the financial consequences of damages done to a citizen of a foreign country unintentionally.

Another situation is connected with personal insurances. In this case, a company undertakes to pay specified benefits or cover costs of sudden accidents included in the insurance, which occur during our international trip (e.g. accidents or sudden illness).

Insurance period is the same as the time of stay in a foreign country.
We are protected by health insurance on the territory of Poland. In extreme situation, high expenses of rescue operations connected with life and health do not strain our budget substantially. When travelling abroad, passengers need to remember that they have to pay for medical counselling a lot. We are not protected by our national health insurance there.

Virtually every insurance company has in its offer such type of insurance. Going abroad on our own, it is worth to buy such a policy, which will guarantee peaceful time during our trip. We do not have to pay the expenses of medical support if we suddenly get ill or participate in an accident. When our trip is organized for us, we need to pay attention to the scope of protection a proposed policy has. Price of such insurance is normally included in the total cost of a trip.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD

Before leaving to EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Switzerland or Norway, a person insured at the National Health Fund (NFZ) should apply for a proper document - European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or E 100 form.

E 100 form or EHIC is a proof that a given person is entitled to receive health benefits in their country, and in case of the Card, it is a proof that the insurer has agreed to cover the expenses of necessary treatment during stay in a foreign country.

If a passenger does not have a proper document, he or she may have to cover the expenses on their own. An application for refund of incurred expenses has to be submitted directly to the health insurance institution of a country where medical services have been performed. However, it must be remembered that in order to receive refund of incurred costs by a foreign institution, a person will not only need to have evidence of payment for received health services, but also an E form or European Health Insurance Card valid during the period of receiving health services issued by a provincial office of the National Health Fund (NFZ) appropriate for the place of residence in Poland.
